Introduction of Topic and Problem
◦ What is MENTAL HEALTH?
Mental health is a level of psychological well-
being, or an absence of mental illness. It is the
"psychological state of someone who is
functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional
and behavioural adjustment“ (Holmes, 2015,
p.23)
◦ Why does MENTAL HEALTH matter?
Mental health and wellness are essential to
overall health. The World Health Organization
defines health as “... a state of complete
physical, mental, and social well-being.” For all
of us, our mental, physical, and social health are
interdependent.
Library Research
◦ According to the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention. Only 25 percent of people
with mental health issues feel that people are
caring and sympathetic toward their struggles
(Smith, 2018).
◦ According to the Health and Human Services
Office of Minority Health, African Americans
are 20% more likely to experience serious
mental health problems than the general
population (Jackson, 2017).
◦ Summary: From the library research, I was able
to gain extensive facts and figures related to
mental health, particularly that of African
Americans.
Online Research
◦ Illnesses that African Americans most often suffer
from:
◦ Major depression
◦ ADHD
◦ Suicide(African American men)
◦ PTSD (African Americans are more likely to be victims of
violent crime)
◦ African Americans are more likely to experience
certain factors that increase the risk for developing a
mental health condition like homelessness and
violence exposure (NAMI, 2015).
◦ Summary: My online research gave me more up-to-
date information and actual cases related to mental
illness and mental health.
People Research
◦ According to Lily Sanders, “Social media is full of
negativity, people want to look like models, have
houses and money like influencers, their identity
totally changes. This causes a problem with
people’s mental health” (personal
communication, April 10, 2022).
◦ “Personally, I feel as thou suicide is never for no
reason at all! Different things can lead to it such
as; depression, mental disorders, drug abuse,
physical and mental abuse, emotional distress,
bullying, etc.” (J. Doug, personal communication,
April 15, 2022).
◦ Summary: Overall, my people research gave me
perspectives I couldn’t find online or in books.
Listening to how people really feel about mental
health was eye-opening.
Proposal
◦ This final proposal will address the problems associated with mental health.
◦ Based on my research and evidence from books, academic journals, the
Internet, and people (Essays 1, 2, and 3), mental health can best be
addressed by holding multiple events that bring awareness to the topic,
specifically for students right here on the campus of FSU.
◦ These events would be held once a month on FSU’s campus. They would
invite the entire community with special guest speakers for all in attendance.
◦ During my research I found that awareness and community are big for
mental health. Events like these would promote inclusion and provide
activities for groups of all ages.
◦ The overall goal is to spread awareness about mental health and let people
know that they are not alone.
Reflection of Research Process
Overall, my favorite essay was
number 3 because I got to talk
to actual people about my
topic. Getting their
perspectives really made this
research fun.
Essay 1 was the hardest to complete
because I’m not good with books
and I’ve never been to the library.
My topic is relevant for today so
finding books on my topic was
difficult.
For the online research, my
essay was done in one day. I
feel like online research is
easy. Using the CRAAP test
also helped me evaluate my
sources to be sure I had
reliable articles for my essay.
Conclusion
◦ Despite the best efforts of so many
devoted educators, children who
struggle with mental health and
learning disorders still face an array of
serious challenges and obstacles in
school.
◦ It is up to the public, as well as
education systems, to educate
everyone about mental health and the
issues that may be related.
◦ If we all help one another, we could
save a life!
